CHAPTER TWENTY
October 28
My boss called me at 6:00 a.m. and wanted me to come in and work on my day off. âYou owe me!â she hissed. âIâd fire you for all the damages youâve piled up so far, but those two agent friends of yours are highly connected and told me that if you lose your job, I lose mine!â
I explained to her that I had the competition at noon, and she agreed to let me work a âcase and go.â I would go in and case up the mail on my route and pull it down for someone else to carry. What was even more surprising was her proposal that I wear my Ultra-Speedy uniform during the competition and drive an LLV to get there.
âWe need some positive public relations,â she said to me over the phone, âand your antics out there, even though theyâre supposedly ensuring the safety of our nation are doing more harm than good. Those government agents and our people are doing as much damage control as we can, but youâre still making us look very bad out there. Destroying an entire truck full of mail and packages isnât going to help our image. You wonât be on the clock playing your little games, but remember that youâre still wearing the uniform and try not to embarrass us. Now get your ass into work.â
I hung up and threw my uniform on, dragging some deodorant on as almost an afterthought. Using a company vehicle and being in uniform would help me out a lot more than USCS and was a pleasant surprise. Grabbing the M240 case from its hiding spot, I snuck it into the trunk of my car before heading back in to kiss my wife and baby goodbye.
âSee you at noon honey, and good luck!â Leah smiled up at me from bed as I kissed her then Emilee.
âSee you there, angel!â I forced a smile as I turned and left for work.
Ten minutes later I was in the station and throwing mail up like a fiend. Kelly came over to inspect my uniform to make sure it was clean and unwrinkled; god forbid I look like a working-class stiff and tarnish our image. Iâm pretty sure the carriers stuffing their cars, garages and apartments full of stolen mail have that one covered.
In any event, I was cased up and pulled down by 9:00 a.m., and as I was headed toward the door to punch out for the day Kelly intercepted me and handed me a disposable razor and a can of shaving cream.
âI anticipated this. No way youâre going on television with your face looking like that!â she said.
Sighing I grabbed the shaving gear and headed towards the menâs room. I really hate shaving, itâs so inconvenient. By the time I was done shaving and finally out the door it was 9:30. Shoving the M240 case and a dozen other boxes in the back of the LLV I headed over to the mall. I
